Speed Up Windows Boot
Have you noticed lately that it takes longer and longer for your computer to boot up when you turn it on, and that you find yourself doing other activities just to pass the time while it is booting up? If you’re finding yourself in this boat, then you’ll want to make an attempt to improve the response time of your computer. Here are 3 tips for decreasing your computer’s boot time.
Use The Disk Defragmenter
One tool that you can use to increase the performance of your PC is the disk defragmenter, which is used to essentially reorganize the files located in the file system of your computer so that they can be accessed more quickly and efficiently, which means less processing time required by your PC. Step by step instructions for using this tool are listed below.
For Windows Vista & Windows 7
In most cases, the defrag process runs automatically on these two operating systems, so you may not have to worry about doing this at all. You may, however, want to run the process manually every so often to create an even more efficient file system environment.
1. Click Start.
2. Search for “Disk Defragmenter”.
3. Click Disk Defragmenter.
4. Make sure you have the desired disk drives selected and click Defragment Now.
For Windows XP & Older OS Versions
1. Click Start.
2. Click My Computer.
3. Right Click C: and then click Properties.
4. Click the Tools tab.
5. Click Defragment Now.
6. Click Defragment.
Modify Windows Start Up Options
You will find that a lot of programs load when the startup process runs, which can be constraining on your system resources and slow things down. One option that you have is to remove some of the programs that are not needed form the startup process all together. You can use the MSCONFIG tool to change the startup options on your PC.
For Windows Vista & Windows 7
1. Click Start
2. Search for “MSCONFIG”.
3. Click MSCONFIG and then click Continue.
For Windows XP & Older OS Versions
1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. Type “MSCONFIG” and hit Enter.
Once the MSCONFIG program is up and running, you can continue on with the following steps.
1. Click the Startup tab.
2. Uncheck any programs that you feel do not need to load during the startup event. There are a number of programs that could fit this category, Yahoo Instant Messenger, iTunes, Google Toolbar, and more.
3. Click the Services tab.
4. Check “Hide All Microsoft Services”.
5. Uncheck any services that do not need to run at this time.
6. Click Apply
Once this is completed, you’ll need to restart your PC for the changes to take affect.
The next time your computer boots up, you should see a pretty significant increase in the speed at which your PC boots up. This is due to the fact that you no longer have access programs and services loading that don’t need to be loading during the Windows boot up process.
